Train Derailment in Taiwan Claims at least 50 Lives
Hualien County, Taiwan (Apr. 2) - At least 50 people were killed and over 140 people were injured after a train went off the track in a tunnel in Hualien County, Taiwan on Friday, making it the worst derailment on the island in decades.

According to Channel News Asia's report, over 140 people had been injured and hospitalized..
The train had left for Taitung from New Taipei before the derailment occurred in Hualien County.
From the preliminary investigation, construction workers said that a vehicle parked without breaks on plunged of the slope and hit with the engine pulling 8 carriages and carrying 490 passengers (higher than an earlier fire department figure of 350) at around 9.30 am local time.The prosecutor reportedly interrogated a person at the helm of the tunnel project why the vehicle was parked on the slope improperly.
Hours after the accident, passengers were still leaving the scene, some climbing on top of the carriages to find their way out. Passengers utilized their phone lights to appraise the responders the situation, help others.
